SUNDRY AND LINKS

It’s my birthday today!  So…I’ve been working all day. :)   I had a wonderful birthday party yesterday, so I got my celebration over with early.  It was kinda the best party ever:  Rock Band 2 set up in the living room, Rock Band Beatles set up in the rear of the house, and Mario Cart 4 player set up in the guest bedroom.  Gamers dream!  Oh, and I hired a hot dog truck to come by and serve everyone hot dogs and tater tots covered in cheese sauce.  NOM’D!

It’s been a while since I updated the blog and putting aside the guilt I feel, there is no possible way I could have posted something before now.  From January to June has been a complete blur, to the point where at a few points I wasn’t sure I could keep going (FYI, being hospitalized for exhaustion is something I COMPLETELY sympathise with now!  Before, I just thought it was an excuse for drug addition or something, LOL.)  But the woods are now clear and the whole of Season 4 of The Guild is now on hard drives and being edited as we speak!   We’re up to episode 5 and I am so extremely excited to share this season with you, I really love the episodes and feel like we’ve added some really fun storylines and characters you’ll enjoy.  Release date is July 13th on Xbox/MSN, if you haven’t heard.

Also the comic books are all three released now, and we have a new shirt coming out for Season 4, so we have lots of great stuff to offer in our Comicon booth this year!  Thanks to Jamie Chambers, our booth sharer, we got a corner booth in a really prime spot, so for those of you who visited our hole-in-the-wall tiny booth last year, I hope you’ll be pleased!

I haven’t been doing a lot of interviews lately, because frankly I’m sick of talking about myself.  I love that people are interested in what I’m doing, but if I don’t have something new to say I feel like I’m wasting people’s time.  That’s why I’m just concentrating on getting The Guild season made as great as possible, and developing new web series.   Yay!  Kim Evey and I are working on several things and are inching towards the time we can get funding and announce stuff.  Just the idea of working on something new in between Guild seasons makes me excited to keep plugging away.  Thinking about new characters and getting a chance to breathe from 24/7 Guild for 3 years is actually making me excited to GO BACK and starting thinking about season 5.  Weird how a break can inspire you like that.

Anyway, I did do the below interview over A YEAR ago, and Mortified has finally released it.  If you don’t know about it, Get Mortified is a hilarious stage show about people reading embarrassing things from their childhood.  They have two great books out and are branching out into video now!  I was one of the first interviews, but they’ve just recently gotten around to releasing them.  I admit, I’m a bit embarrassed about the video, but I guess that’s the point, LOL.

I will be blogging a bit more now that I have some freeER time, I still have those sci-fi books that you recommended to review, as well as some great fantasy books I’ve picked up.  Cracking the whip on myself, I promise!!

  11. Happy Birthday!

I’d like to interview you about contemporary cultural depictions of Scholastic metaphysical principles. Just give me a few days to think up some questions.

    Or, how about I just encourage you to do more creating :}

    A fan for years.

  12. Lorien says:

The video was awesome! I like that you shared things that embarrass you, it shows that you are a really honest person. It made me want to dig out my teenage journals, but on second thought, no. I wasn’t homeschooled, but I moved around quite a bit. I spent the majority of my middle and early high school years in isolation. No one likes the new kid. Because of this I too found friendship on the internet. I spent 4-6 hours a day on Science Fiction and Fantasy chat. This is the main reason I won’t let myself play WOW. I know I’ll become irrevocably addicted. I also have some pictures that I took for my chat friends, those can stay in a box with the journals. Definitely mortifying.

  13. Sam says:

You’re crazy! More work when you need rest? :) But I guess idle hands–Eh, that maxim is rather worn.

What books are you working on? My reading list is pretty long too. Still, I Love to find more interesting books to read!

    Cheers!

  14. Martijn says:

    Have a wonderful birthday!

Thanks for giving me the inspiration to make
    my own square hole.

    Martijn

P.S. “Embrace the Fail” should go on a t-shirt.

  15. POP says:

  19. eighty says:

why embarrassed? for a homescholled geek, you looked pretty awesome (not that you don’t now but long red hair and come-on-boy pose … gotta love that, seriously!).

  22. JADSTERSDAD says:

Happy Birthday for yesterday, Felicia! Looking forward to all the new stuff. Andy

  23. Feydrus says:

Long time fan, first time commenter. I thought the hotdog cart at your birthday party is pure genius. I liked the video a lot to as it reminds me (and likely others) of the wonderfully horrid crucible that is surviving teenage-hood. Interesting to see that the crucible remains sans an actual highschool.

And what I liked the most: “Embrace the Fail!”, wisdom to live by indeed….

  24. Dana says:

Happy just-barely-belated birthday, Felicia! Glad to see you back on your blog, and hopefully you will never have 6 blurry months again.

  25. Joe says:

As a recovering perfectionist and bbs junkie, I want to say “Great interview! I sympathize!” As a fan, I say Happy Birthday!

  26. Kassie says:

After high school and college, I also wondered why I worked so hard and why I put myself through so much stress. I should have embraced more experiences. “Embrace the fail,” is a fabulous motto.

Although not a gamer, I had my quirks in high school and college where I found my social outlet online since in-person, I was constantly, painfully shy around people…except on stage for some reason. In this way, I feel like I relate to The Guild, even though I don’t actually game.

Your independence and success in what personally fulfills you as a creative person is inspiring. Thanks for doing what you do.

  27. len says:

Cracking the whip on myself, I promise!!

    Happy Birthday, Mistress!

Admirable ambition and discipline. Really really looking forward to the new season, but…. stay well, lady. Burn out is cumulative and singe is noticeable.

  28. Jess says:

    Happy birthday!

I’m homeschooling my daughter, and I promise I will never make her kiss ANYBODY. Of course, she’s currently reading while hanging upside-down from the couch, so I think the weirdness, even at age 7, is pretty well set in stone.

  29. Sali says:

    Loved the interview.

    Happy Birthday!

  30. Inevari says:

Late congratulations on your birthday – you’re awsome! Keep doing what you are doing, the Guild is a top, top show.

Also hope that one day you might come to visit us, scandinavian fans too.

  31. Jym McMurdo says:

Happy birthday Felicia! Hope you had a wonderful day yesterday! :)

  32. Miranda says:

Great video! That was a lot of fun to watch :D

I am so jealous that you hired a hot dog truck for your birthday party! Sounds like it was an awesome celebration.

  33. Megan says:

Happy (late, sorry) birthday, Felicia! I marathoned The Guild yesterday in honor of you. :)

  34. B.E. Earl says:

    Happy belated ya-yas.

Oddly enough, I’ve been reading this one woman’s blog for years and she occasionally mentions Mortified, but I never went to the site. But I followed your link and it turns out she is in the local chapter here in NYC. Small e-world.

  35. Max says:

    Happy Birthday :)

  36. Timm says:

Happy belated Birthday, Felicia! Better late than never, right?:)

I discovered The Guild just recently but I wanted to say that it’s one of the most creative and funniest series I’ve ever seen. And what you and the rest of the cast and crew make happen with the limited resources to create the show is just amazing. Really inspiring for everyone (including me) who wants to make art and do his/her own thing. The DVDs are already on my shelf.

A hot dog truck? That’s cool. I want one of those for my next birthday, haha!

Stay healthy! (got me scared for a moment there with the hospitalizing thing.)

    Timm

P.S.: “Embrace the fail.”—-> That’s a good one. I have to use that some time.

  37. Fernando says:

A single B in all your college studies. WOOOOW!!!

  38. Neil Myers says:

Glad to hear you’re coming up for air!

I think we all understand the interviews are done mostly while wearing your VP of Marketing hat. But if you get opportunities to do more in-depth interviews (a la Kevin Pollak’s Chat Show or Reddit or NPR?) you will always be a fascinating subject.

Keep seeking the life/work balance that sustains you. And thanks for doing what we love.

  39. Phillip says:

Happy birthday and welcome back to Blogsville :)

    Can’t wait for season 4!

  40. Barentanz says:

    Happy Birthday.
I just wanted you to know that writing a letter about Stillwater Mine at 12 is AWESOME! That makes you, like, super-amazing (Not that you weren’t already).

I love the video. The talking about homeschooling is great (lack of socialization and all). I agree with the isolation, except that mine is dual: I’m homeschooled, and I live in the middle of nowhere (actually, a few hours drive from Stillwater Mine in eastern Montana).

Thanks for all your great work Ms. Day!

  41. Leon says:

Happy birthday Felicia, may all your DOT’s crit.

Your 12yr old self has a better vocabulary than my 40yr old self, argh.

  42. Christopher says:

Happy Birthday! It sounds like you had a lovely day.

Can’t wait to see you at Comic-Con. Looking forward to the new shirt. I know you have lots of book recommendations. If you are interested I wrote my best music of the year so far blog. The top of the list is the new Zoë Keating album. :)

  43. Em says:

    Happy Birthday!

  44. Kevin says:

Happy birthday! Interview was pretty cool. Some interesting instances to your life.

“Embrace the fail.” *Stores that away in the far recesses of the mind to use again another day.*

  45. Adam says:

Well hapy birthday and love the hot dog truck idea. I got bored one day (currently deployed) and found “The Guild”, great way to pass the time. I find it to be very funny and even though i haven’t watched all the seasons I can’t wait for season 4. Hope to see you and the rest of the cast in other funny things and best of luck to you all. Maybe one day i’ll make it to Comicon and check out the booth.

    -Adam

When you’re outta fuel, your altitude is dropping, and you’re out of ideas…Eject! Eject!! Eject!!!

  46. Chris Feyrer says:

Who’s that? I vaguely recall — OH! Felicia Day! But I thought she was a myth from the distant past!

Welcome back. Sometimes I talk to people who indicate everything you do is about Dr. Horrible, and it’s all luck and looks.

After I tase them and they fall to the floor, I explain calmly they don’t understand the meaning of hard work and dedication, and that you made your own luck.

Then they call the cops and I spend the night in jail. But the point stands!

    Chris

  47. Moominboy says:

    Happy Birthday!

Thank you for all the wonderful entertainment that you provide for us gamers (and not only, ofc)! But please, don’t over-exhaust yourself. We will patiently wait for your next project :)

  48. Dilyara says:

    Happy Birthday!!!

who am i kidding. i still believe it.

Wow, TIL I share the same birthday as Felicia Day! Happy belated birthday!

  57. Felicia.

No one ever comments on my blog.
    Would you please?
Maybe it will start people talking.

    Happy Birthday, 5 days late.

  58. Zak says:

Unfair coal mining legislation? Have you *ever* been normal? Like, seriously. ^_^
I’m still curious if there’s Felicia Day improv out there to be seen?

Oh, and I guess our long-awaited question of Felicia’s natural hair color has finally been answered.

  59. Tjohn says:

Haha woo that video was so cool! Your life is interesting IMHO. :D

  60. Dunfalach says:

    Firstly, Happy Birthday, Felicia!

I was homeschooled myself, from 7th grade to 12th, and personally loved it. But it sounds like my mom was a bit more involved in my day than yours. Then again, I wasn’t quite as self-motivated as you were either. I’d have probably skipped all the subjects I didn’t like if left to my own devices. ;) We got the “socialization” argument when we first started homeschooling, and there are certainly those who experience it, but overall homeschoolers tend to score much higher than public school kids on the standardized socialization tests, because on average they interact with a much wider range of ages and people on a regular basis, where public school kids mostly just interact with their peers. When we first started, there was actually a local homeschool group that got together regularly at the local skating rink, which was fun.

Why is writing letters to your Senator evidence of an unsocialized childhood though. Isn’t that social awareness? :)

I loved the story of your mom’s involvement in your interaction with these gamer guys. That was absolutely hilarious. Thanks for the fun!

  61. James A Woods says:

Happy birthday! (a bit late) I’m excited to learn more about what you’ve been up to. The vid was good too.

  62. Happy Birthday Felicia!!!

Perhaps I’ll see you at the SD Comic Con! (I live in San Diego).

    Have fun!

    Mark :)

  63. Manuel says:

    Happy (a-week-later) birthday.
I was so messed up these day, I forgot to look your blog (and twitter/facebook).

Still waiting for you in Italy (as well as The Guild DVDs and Comics). Shall I expect to see you here in Milan at the comic event in September (dunno the name, they’re doing so many of them here, I can’t remember them all :P ).

Closing: youth’s always inside of us :P

  64. Chris Feyrer says:

Disclaimer: For those of you who do not know me, the previous comment was intended as satire of an overzealous fan. I do not endorse tasing people on behalf of Felicia Day, nor evenings of imprisonment, and nor do I think she would appreciate such actions on her “behalf. I do not believe that she would ever tase anyon–//zzzap/

  65. B says:

    happy belated!
ooo the guild, so looking forward to the new season

  66. Suzie says:

That video was awesome! I’m glad you are happy just making stuff for the people who are like you because that makes ME happy and feel like I’m not lame? LOL. Anyway, glad you’re blogging again.

I also concur with the other comments about your birthday party. It sounds awesome. If I had friends that would actually show up to a party I would totally do that. (Well, minus the hot dog cart ’cause I surely could not afford that.)

  67. len says:

The latest in birthday gifts from the special someone who really cares…

The question is, would you test it before giving it to that special someone?

  68. Blair says:

    Hi Felicia

You’ve been working like crazy ever since I have started to see your work, and there is a lot out there for an fan to enjoy. Take some time for you, and come back when you are refreshed :)

Thanks for your hard work to this point, looking forward to S4 and S3 of neil

  69. Lostboy says:

That was my favorite interview I’ve yet seen of you, Felicia. It’s always cool to see the roots out of which a creative person grew.

  70. [...] a recent blog post from Felicia Day, she mentions her birthday party, a bit about working on season 4, and an old [...]

  71. Oyster Buddy says:

I hope this doesn’t creep you out, but you are my wallpaper…

  72. korkster says:

Definitely a freshening experience hearing about your childhood. Even though I stumbled into your world as a Whedon fan, it is nice to hear something that isn’t about DHSAB. You’re way braver than I am- that box of childhood experiences got burned years ago.

And you’re right. Don’t be afraid to take risks. At least, that’s what I keep reminding myself. I keep waiting for someone to show the real world of life beyond science majors… but that doesn’t scream *awesome* to anyone but me I guess. In honor of you putting yourself out there (both in childhood and as an actor), I’ll write a couple of pages today and see if I bore myself to death.

  73. Mary says:

Guys never believe I’m a girl when I play MMO’s either… T_T I don’t blame them though, my one male friend purposely trolls people online as a woman- got a voice synthesizer to raise the pitch of his voice, too. O_o (So I can kinda understand the disbelief)

It’s nice to hear someone successful like yourself to say that it’s okay to make mistakes. I’m a senior in college and risks/failure bother me, but I guess I should embrace them both, huh?

Wonderful interview, and I hope that your birthday was pleasant ^^

Anxiously waiting for the arrival of season 4! :D

  74. Paul says:

Happy Belated Birthday from one UT Alumni (BSAE) to another.

“Why did I work so hard? That girl needs to fail more. Embrace the fail.”
    10 points to that!
I know a few people who could really benefit from these words of wisdom!

    Happy B-day!

  76. Soede says:

Eeeek! I dont want to be a faceless snowman avatar!
    Comment take 2!

  77. Josh says:

Yay more awesome homeschoolers! This video just makes me so proud to be a nerdy anti social Trekkie. Lol
    Anywho Happy birthday!

  78. chanel says:

i am so happy to hear that you had a good birthday party.

  79. Thanks for taking the time to debate this, I really feel strongly about it and love studying more on this topic. If potential, as you gain experience, would you mind updating your blog with additional info? This can be very useful for me.
