Whereas before, people with esteem issues had nowhere to turn, now there is a perceived global audience who can potentially bestow validation. Of course, this is the ideal; like any community, there are tensions and conflicts. This makes the internet a double-edged sword, capable of instantly transmitting the best and worst of human nature.
