I wanted to get this blog up before the finale on Tuesday so I can have a dedicated post next week about the season as a whole. And WHOAH has it been a whole season! 🙂 I simply can’t believe that the finale is Tuesday!
EPISODE 10: FESTIVAL OF THE SEA

So, this season I set out to scale back a LOT.  Last season we went outdoors waay too often, had waaay too many actors, and it was really hard to accomplish on the budget.  So THIS season I tried to only let me crazy imagination out with the idea that we’d throw a huge party at Cheesybeards.  Generally, I didn’t REALLY accomplish that, haha, but living through this shoot, I was very happy that I kept my mind at least a WEE BIT under control.

This episode had SO MANY EXTRAS!  Thank you each and every person for coming out at 5:30am and joining us in making this episode a possibility.  I really hope everyone had a good time filming in that tiny room.  The production design and acting are just all soooo amazing, it’s my favorite of the season for sure.  SO MUCH IS GOING ON and it’s still under 8 minutes.  Really proud of that.

Because I had to learn the ukelele for it, Ollie’s song is really the highlight for me personally.  I did a rough draft of the lyrics, but I couldn’t really write it myself because I’m not really a composor, so I enlisted @paulandstorm, the dynamic nerd comedy duo, to help me with the final product.  They knocked it out of the park, and took all my gross ideas and made them 10x grosser!  We only hear a fraction of the lyrics in the show, but go over to their website, and for the small price of $1.00 you can download “The Pirate’s Feast” and hear the glory of pirate cannibalism go on and on and on.  SO GOOD!

Acting-wise, I love Fawkes’ comeuppance (we hired a real stunt guy for that throw!) and the way @wilw played it was just note-perfect:  Codex really didn’t know how to deal with the touch of sincerity he was showing her.  A special thanks to the other Axis members and @micheleboyd (Riley) for coming out to do their cameos.  I wanted to use them more, but it’s web video and there wasn’t room.  Next time!

Also, if you enjoyed the plot twist, we have the 8-bit Baby tee that Clara and Tink were selling over at our Jinx store with many other Guild styles, so check it out!

EPISODE 11: HOSTILE TAKEOVERS

While episode 10 was MY favorite, I’ve heard that the cast likes THIS episode the best. NOW I think it’s really really strong, but after I finished the script some of the funniest stuff wasn’t on the page, we came up with it later on the set and in editing, so the fact that it is a great episode has a lot to do with the performers and the actors and the collaboration of filmmaking in general.  Which is, of course, why the art form is so fun: It’s not all on the writer’s shoulders.  Most, but not all 🙂

I guess when I finished the script, I felt like episode 10 really would eclipse the story in this one, because it’s really a transitional one that ramps up into episode 12.  But the acting, especially Vork’s: His agony about the wedding, his insistence on going through with it, and the immense pride about the Guild Hall…Jeff Lewis was really running the gamut for this 6 minutes and he SOLD it.  Also, I forgot how funny it was going to be to physically see an in-game wedding from OUT of the wedding.  It really turned out as weird and dysfunctional as I thought it would be. 🙂

My favorite gag in the episode is Bladezz showing up with that crazy tan!  Several days before shooting I had just seen something about Jersey Shore (yes, I live under a nerd rock) and I was so appalled that people think those people are cool that I turned to the makeup woman, Jen, and said, “Can you use your airbrush to make Vince have a horrible tan? We need him douchier.”  Luckily she was totally into it.  And I really loved how, on the day, Sean and I had a deep discussion whether Vince’s hands/eyes should be tan.  I gave into Sean, left them untanned, which is actually funnier.  Bladezz is SUCH A DOUCHEBAG when he enters, Vince really nailed it, as he has done all season.

My favorite line of the episode is one of Zaboo’s:  “…I’m gonna replace my organs with clockwork and sell myself to a Steampunk museum!”  A lot of people said I should cut it out, but I insisted on keeping it, despite probably other people being right, and Sean, the director, totally sold it by making Zaboo wear that watch and try to gnaw on it.  That’s HIS watch BTW, so…real dedication there, haha.

And then the cliffhanger…wow.  It’s always the joke with me and Sean, “Hey!  What’s the VFX for this season’s script?”  Well, I decided EARLY on we’d see into the game, and stupidly I had NO TECHNICAL IDEA how that would happen.  So…thank you @gregaronowitz for building a 12 foot miniature for us that we could pull out and see…THAT.  There will be a special extra on the DVD about how that all happened, and I’ll talk more about it next week 🙂  Suffice it to say that no web series in history has had a professional artist create something like that.  We are truly the most blessed web series online.

OH another thing!  We have the ‘Team Cawkes” poster for sale over at Think Geek now!  It’s a big, glossy poster and proceeds go to Child’s Play charity, so nab one while you can!  If it says “backordered” that just means a few days delay, they’ve sold a ton more than they expected and just need to roll and box them!

  • I love the way Fawkes says ‘interesting’. And Clara’s business voice. So funny!

The bit that really killed me was when Bladezz enters and Zaboo goes “oh the devil’s here, that makes sense”, that made me laugh out loud so hard.

My husband and I got married in WoW (a few weeks before our real life wedding), although he doesn’t actually play usually.

    • A few years ago I’d have to pay someone for this infmoraotin.

  • I’ve got to say, I’m loving this season something rotten! (That’s a good thing by the way)

Wheaton’s Fawkes has been really great but it must be noted that his skill at playing a scum bag is increasing…this may bode ill for RL. Unless his off screen beating has returned him to his former, purer ways 🙂

I liked the steampunk line, and Sandeep delivered it really well. Why on earth did the others want it out?

The online wedding was hilarious and took the Guild’s dysfunctional skill set into the epic range!

Now that I think back to your remarks before the season started, you were right. Bladezz has been brilliant and has brought a zen-like focus to his douche…iness. The tan was hilarious.

Please keep the guild coming, it’s without doubt the best webseries on the net.

I have to agree with the rest of the cast… episode 11 is my favorite! Might be my favorite from all season even! My comment about it on the community thread was huge…

I can’t even pick a favorite scene, though I do want to say again that I loved Tink telling Clara that she enjoys spending time with her and running their business. You’ve said before that you think this was Bladezz’s season to shine, but for me, it was Tink’s. I loved how since she left the AoA she really accepted (and now admitted) that she likes these people, as crazy as they might be.

The in game scene was AWESOME! I never really wanted to see the game… I mean, I always thought it would be cool, but I don’t think it’s a thing the show HAD to do, cause I think it’s more about the characters, and not the game. So, with that said, I always thought that to see the game it’d have to be “the right time”, and I think this was definitely it! It fits perfectly with the story, it was so well done and it has details that just sold it to me; like Vork’s statue and the characters moving like toons move in WoW (and I guess other mmos) when you’re afk/not walking was just PERFECT! Loved that!

Damn, didn’t want to write a lot again and did… this episode is just too good, can’t not talk about it! Can’t wait for the finale!

  • Bladezz is such a D-Bag! Nearly swallowed my togue when he walked in!

I ordered the Team Fawkes poster shortly after it was announced, but haven’t gotten any word that it’s been shipped yet. This is going up in my new apartment in Seoul, btw! 😀

  • Dani

(correction) *Might be my favorite from all seasons

  • Dani

oh, also… that litmus list seemed to be about Zaboo, not Fawkes…. uhhmmm, I’m interested to see where that goes!

  • Markus

Superb. Utterly superb. You really dont notice that the show was scaled down this series as the party at Cheesybeards was immense! So much to look out for!! (I’m certain I saw Brian and Kenny in the queue for Bladezz’ autograph) 🙂

And I will confess a small air-punch when Fawkes got bodyslammed down the stairs. Karma at its finest 🙂

The penultimate episode was superb. I thought everyone shone in this one. Really looking forward to the BTS footage of how the in-game scenes were done.

Also I’m still unsure if the in-game wedding is Vork’s clever move to get out of a real wedding……or this is how he thinks weddings just….are 🙂

Still stunned that we’ve only got 1 episode left. But thanks so much for S4 Felicia. Its been epic.

    Markus.

The shows quality has been increasing steadily year after year. I honestly believe each session was way better thant the one that preceded it (im sorry, i know you hate to hear things like that as it puts a lot of pressure on you for next season, but its the truth)
Only sad note is were not going to have more guild for quite a lot of months. Well miss the knights of good. Theyve made me laugh a lot in a particularly stressful point of my life. Thank you

  • Bailey

I’m new to watching the guild. apparently I’ve been under a rock for 3 years 😛 I love everything about this show; how great the cast is, how hilarious it is, and how this show was written. The guild is a really fantastic series and I hope that there are more seasons to come.

I have to agree with most people that episode 11 was my favorite. Vork was hilarious. Jeff Lewis rocked this episode, along with Zaboo. He always has the best one liners 🙂

Congratulations to all the success over the years.

  • kalita

I loved the steampunk line, IMO the funniest of the ep. Glad you kept it!

  • So sad the season is almost over. At least I have the extras to look forward to on the DVD when it comes out.

Thanks for another brilliant season, Felicia!

  • Threu

I have to say 11 was epic, but I think 10 had a very good feel to it.. it was all set at Cheesybeards, and I agree, it gives it that sitcom edge, kinda felt like cheers with movie elements …it had a cheery, friendly feeling to it, especially since it was a party with the mmo players …and it had good background noise, cool sound effects, and even background music skits for various scenes.. even had stunts in it : ) …i know you incorporate these things in other episodes as well, but the whole atmosphere in 10 was awesome and everything really worked well together

  • Pims

OH MY CTHULHU! the season finale was just brilliant! truly inspired

and yay it looks like Zadex or Coboo or whatever cutesy couple name there is for Codex and Zaboo might finally happen! romance’d

On another note are those trendy Guild Hall banners with the characters actually purchasable? and can we be expecting more of the wonderful Simon Helberg next season?

  • Michael

You scored Simon Helberg for this?!!? Awesome!

  • Susan Clarke

LOVE the finale. Best of the season. The characters have really developed naturally so that you can see Zaboo appealing to Codex and Tink working with Clara. And Vork leaving the house. And Bladezz embracing the douchiness. Douchinity…Douche Side!

And Simon..I nearly fell off my chair. I love that guy.

  • Great Felicia! I’ll be looking out for the season finale post next week..
    http://justapodcast.com

  • I tweeted Simon Helberg and told him, you know you’ve made it as an actor when you get a part on the Guild… 🙂

    ’tis true.

  • len

And now we know what the Moist thinking was about.

So begins the dry spell waiting for next season to see how a conference can actually be funny. Someone handed me a uke at one of those, pix ended up on the web and I remembered why I had quit going a decade earlier: pain, humiliation, cops at the hotel room door… ingenues. It became so…. funky without the saltiness. Not enough rock.

Nice job wrapping up the season. Next up… Red. Furries and wire-fu.

  • Vicky

    Hi Felicia!

have you seen this video by actor Joseph Campo ?

It’s entirely dedicated to you, this being episode 5 of his awesome and hilarious campaign to get an audition on Game of Thrones.

    Enjoy!

  • Susan Clarke

Shhhhh…(Okay for next season, the Knights run into Fawkes at the convention waiting in line for Wil Wheaton’s autograph. Meta! Maybe they could check out a Legend of Neil panel too!)

  • Just want to do a shout out for the great sound and post that goes into this show. The more I familiarize myself with the workflow of creating music for the web, the more and more I respect the professional level of quality you guys have achieved.

People can’t laugh if they can’t hear a joke — people can’t get in the mood if the sound mix is off. It’s a delicate balance. So to whoever does the final mixes for sound in post (Sean?) — awesome job!!!

    Chris

  • Pims

Zaboo wears a legend of Neil tshirt in one ep 🙂 and the meth not crack addict (aka producer Kim Evey) who stood in line for Tink that time was also in the background for a legend of Neil ep! I laughed so hard

  • Eric

Just so you know, I have a huge research presentation tomorrow morning. So instead of doing some last minute prep work, I’ve spent the last several hours watching every episode for the first time after being pointed to your series by a friend.

It is now my goal to work “Kissy Face” and “Taste my Pirate Paddy” into the talk tomorrow.

    Brilliant.

    • hahahaha! Oops, don’t fail because of us! 🙂

  • Am I the only one who was sad to see Fawkes get tossed over a railing? He was being vulnerable, wanting to reform… where’s his reward for trying to grow as a person? :-

  • Vlada

So it’s Tuesday tomorrow and I have just realised that season is already over and there won’t be another new episode for a while now! OMG it’s a disaster! /cry

  • Susan Clarke

I kind of agree. I wasn’t ready to see Fawkes tossed like that. I would have preferred a more subtle form of retaliation (Actually, I thought Codex rejecting him was working pretty well at taking the stuffing out of him.)

  • Tony

    Hey

Just an idea, you could put your show on itunes.

  • alicesmile

What really carries the series through is the POV of the main character, Lee. The books are written in first person from her point of view.JN0-531 When I first started the first book, I first thought it was a bit simply written, like a Young Adult novel.156-315 But as I progressed through the book and into series, I realize it’s because the author was being so faithful to the first person view. Lee is naive, not experienced, and very stubborn, so, even if I, the reader, knows something is up with a secondary character or plotline, Lee doesn’t necessarily do the sensible thing or add it up, which can be annoying, but makes it REAL.
E20-340 The main character grows through the series, but is never going to be terribly insightful, by definition of her character and the world the author built, which is part of the fun.
1z0-050 I just have to admire that.

This season had a lot of fun moments, but I do have a bit of constructive criticism. The overarching plotline didn’t seem quite as cohesive as it did for me in previous seasons. Maybe its because several things feel left in the air. Seasons 1, 2 and 3 feel like they tell separate cohesive stories, even though there were cliffhanger endings, while season 4 feels like part 1 of a mega-season. There’s more balls in the air than usual, it made the finale feel like less of an ending to a season.

  • Kristy

I’d love to know more about Codex’s family. I can picture her having a younger sister who is awful haha.
