Staring at myself too much

Today was a “look at Felicia’s face” day.  Ugh.   Between rehearsing sides in the mirror for an audition, watching the gag reel for The Guild being edited, and picking out which new headshots I want to upload for my agents to see, I’m pretty much sick of my own face.  Like, seriously.

The funny thing is, I think most actors DON’T like to see themselves.  The whole goal of “good work” is to be un-self conscious, which is hard when your business is your face and body.  Most human beings don’t get the opportunity to analyze their own expressions minutely, so it’s only actors/models who get paranoid that the bottom of their nose moves when they talk, or their teeth look like they could gnaw off a hand if they smile too wide.

I guess that’s why I like doing comedy.  Because you can mock yourself if you trip or stumble over a line, or generally look like an idiot, which happens to me a lot.   Anyway, I’m pretty excited that a gag reel of The Guild will be online, along with a spiffier Guild website in the coming week, and a new episode will be up in about two.

The REAL drama today was the headshot.  Oh boy.  Getting new acting headshots taken is like jamming salt in your eyeballs.  The inside of you is like, “Sell yourself!  Be sparky!”  and at the same time, “try to look natural, stupid!”.  It usually ends up that half the photos have a maniacal smile, with a gleam of desperation in the eyeball.   Or your eyes are dead, like a fish on ice.  Not really hireable.   It’s a hard thing to get one good picture, and there’s no wonder that the main one I’m still using has hair that is chin-length, from two years ago.  Oops.

I don’t know if anyone else has experienced this, but I notice it’s amazing how different clothes bring out different aspects of my personality.  In a big chunky sweater, or a spaghetti-strap tank, the things the camera picks up are startlingly different.    Also, I notice that when I had short hair, especially when it was REALLY short, I was a lot spunkier and outgoing.  More confrontational.  Now, I feel more reserved and I wonder if that’s a question of being perceived/feeling more feminine?  It’s weird.

I’ll post the winning photo on here when it’s determined. Oh ya.  I guess I should update the website gallery too.  Oh God, more face.

Speed Tips?

Here I am all excited to play the Hellgate beta for only the second time since I got a key, when I run into the deadly re-download. NOOOO! Why they make me redownload 4 gigs and not patch it, I don’t know. But, I started the download, and promptly ran into a problem I haven’t had in a while: Speed Envy. My brother, with a cable modem, is outclocking my download by 3 TIMES! I can’t get over 93 kb speed, and he’s over 300! Now, I’m supposed to have the middle speed DSL from AT&T, fastest isn’t available in my area :( , and I’ve noticed that my connection is REALLY slow compared to other lines I’ve logged onto. So, in a fit of outrage as my speed stalled and his whizzed ahead of me, I called tech support.

Why, oh why, did I bother. I disposed of 49 minutes of my life as a semi-helpful man read from a manual and told me to do asinine things to my computer, at one point blaming my laggy connection on a single piece of DoubleClick spyware. He tried to pawn me off on a variety of other departments at the end, only to find they were “experiencing high call volume”; translate to “asleep or not picking up the phone.” So, what did I end up with? Having to start my download ALL OVER AGAIN because he told me to restart my computer, and had absolutely NO INSTRUCTIONS after that, like a restart would magically solve my speed problems.

So, can anyone give me tips to speed up my connection? I would even switch companies, I swear. Too bad I don’t have the budget for a T1 line. Oh wow. If I were a big movie star, I wouldn’t buy Prada bags, I’d get a T1 line into the house. :)

Sigh. 16%.

So sleepy….

Just wanted to post a quick note before I crash from being up 15 hours straight working on The Guild. We wrapped a few hours ago! I’m so happy with how things turned out, I don’t believe I’ve ever laughed so hard on camera when I shouldn’t have because other actors were SO funny. I hope we can cut around my giggling :)

It will take a few weeks to edit, but I’m so happy that so many people were willing to lend a hand to make it possible for us to make these episodes! Thank you Dustin and Jermaine for coming out and being so helpful by…sitting :) OK, I’m tired now. Nighty night. Tomorrow I’ll try to find as dastardly a post as the spinning lady to entertain you guys anew. Muhahaha.

Crazy Picture!

My brother sent this link to me. When you look at the figure, which way is it turning? Clockwise or Counterclockwise?

“If clockwise, then you use more of the right side of the brain and vice versa.

Most of us would see the dancer turning anti-clockwise though you can try to focus and change the direction; see if you can do it. ”

Link to article here. I saw it going clockwise and I can’t make it turn the other way! It’s like one of those hidden 3D pictures from like 10 years ago. I always had to struggle with making the figure pop out!
