Night of Nerddom

I just finished watching a few of the new shows on TV, I watch them all of course, and somehow coincidentally I watched “Chuck” and “Big Bang Theory” back to back.   Nerds on TV overload!

Most of the time the “nerd” character in Hollywood grates on my nerves.  There were moments in each of these shows where I was like, “Uh, stereotype” but for the most part I’m eager to have a little more brains on TV and these shows may very well fulfill that.  Oh, except for the girl characters.  They went with the cookie cutter blondes on that front.  I guess one step at a time!

First “Chuck”.  It’s been trendy the last few years to have nerd sidekicks, but it’s nice to see the geek have his glory as a lead.  I liked that Chuck wasn’t such a stereotypical nerd, and it looks like the series could go some cool places, but I’m reserving judgment on whether I’m raving.   It seems like the show is trying to do a lot at once, and I guess a few more episodes will tell if this will stay on my Tivo or not.  There are a lot of suspension of disbelief moments in this, some tres cheesy, but I do like the lead actor, and the whole Best Buy ripoff workplace could provide some funny story lines.  It looks like they will be going with more of the espionage angle though, so I’ll just watch and see.   After seeing Gossip Girl (UGH) this show was amazing in comparison.

“Big Bang Theory” I really wanted to hate, but thankfully there were many moments where I laughed out loud, more than any other comedy I’ve seen since The Office season was over.  It’s really well written and acted.  At first I was like “Oh no, they’re playing stereotypical nerds” but after the first scene I really got into the clever dialogue, and I love the fact that, for once, the actors weren’t reading their lines to the rafters.  For some reason they direct sitcom acting SO BIG lately, and the offhand delivery here was so refreshing.  The guy playing Sheldon particularly charmed me, his line delivery reminded me of Niles from Frasier.  I have no idea why the girl’s character would ever hang out with these guys, but I decided to go with it because I wanted to see more of the guys’ characters.  I definitely will keep watching this.  And not only because they had a WOW screenshot in it :) but because I don’t want the sitcom to die as an art form.  And if Chuck Lorre has to save it singlehandedly, then so be it!

I Have my Life Back!

Movie wrapped Saturday, or should I say, Sunday morning :)   I was really sad to drive away from the set, knowing that I’d never be going back, but at the same time, I was eager to go home and have time to vacuum and stuff, because there are dog/cat hair tumbleweeds the size of my fist floating down the hallway.

I guess I can say the name of the project now that it’s done.  It’s “Prairie Fever” and it stars Kevin Sorbo (yummolicious) and I believe it will be on the Hallmark Channel, not sure of the timing.  It’s a western, and between getting cow patties on my dress and sweating in a 110 degree heat a lot, it was a dream come true :)   I will definitely plug more for the show when it gets closer to airing.  I haven’t worked with such wonderful actors since being in “Warm Springs”.    It was really inspiring to me, because when I work with actors who are so gifted, it makes me want to go work on my craft, so I can be as facile as they are.   But I also I can’t wait to go back to comedy improv class from doing all this drama and pretend to fart on someone in a scene.

I am implementing some of those juicy lifehacker/zen habits lists to get the piles of undone tasks done because it’s pretty overwhelming.  Number ONE is planning on getting the new episodes of The Guild shot.  We have cast members/crew still working on other stuff for a bit so juggling schedules will be “fun”, but my task is to get the shoot planned ASAP and get the turnover time shortened so that we can have an episode out by late October.   Frustrating that there’s that long a lag, but when you’re working 14 hour days 6 days a week, not much can happen with planning, especially when you don’t have cell service or email.  Utter torture.  Also, we ARE in talks with getting money to do a bunch of episodes at a time, which is fantastic, but it’s not reality until the paper is in front of you, as they say. :)

As far as everything else, my “prioritized list” is as long as my arm.  I think 43 folders has a nice video on “inbox zero” that my brother has been preaching to me that I’ll be checking out.   I need the help.   I literally have 200 emails to return.   And at least 15 messages from my Mother, telling me what she bought at Target last night from the last two weeks, and how her dog is doing.  She likes to share stuff with my answering machine, LOL.

Interesting Research on Online Gaming

Just came across a link that Courtney posted in a comment. Great link. This researcher studies and surveys online gamers and their psychology. For some reason this site looks like butt on my screen, but the fascinating info is worth highlighting the text to read.

I especially enjoyed the essay on how men and women approach online gaming differently. You go “oh yeah” when you read the facts, like

female players are significantly more likely to always group with people they’ve grouped with before when compared with male players

but you don’t really observe those things unless they are pointed out. I also thought this was interesting:

Female players are significantly more likely to be in officer or leader positions within guilds than male players (link). Female players are also significantly more likely to participate in guild events than male players (link).

Most assumptions would be the opposite I think, as far as leadership roles. Anyway, the article is quite interesting, as is all his other research. Like:

The more a player is achievement-oriented, the more likely they will quit the game.

Those players whose goal becomes to “be the best” are the most likely to burn out, whereas the ones who use it as a social tool will be around for a while. Anyway, definitely worth a look. I will post it in my forums too.

On another note, I was at the bookstore today and saw a map of Los Angeles ON CLOTH. I can’t find a link to one on the internet no matter how hard I search, and I’m so annoyed I didn’t buy it! It was so much like the Ultima cloth maps! I will go buy it and take a picture. :)

Knocking my head against wall…

Ok, this will be the last of my frustrated technology posts.  They’re starting to bore me, so I know they’re boring other people too. LOL. But…I got the forums up!  Check them out!

I got a skin I like, although a few of the random pictures are hella cheesy, I think the layout and colors are nice.  00′s Nagel anyone? :)   After spending 3 hours trying to alter another skin and coming up with what looks like a rainbow vomit onto the screen, I think I did pretty good, since I combed through every skin I could find on the internet, thanks guys for the links.  I added some smilies for Dustin, and some really crappy avatars and I believe this will be the extent to which I will be dealing with the forums now.   My next task is to add a forum graphic and link to the blog here, but I just banged my head against the WordPress theme editor for hours, I don’t know my way around php very well, and I basically gave up as I started to break the Flog :)
After my movie is over this weekend I will start updating my feliciaday.net and add a forums link to that as well as add the forums button to the blog too.  There will be a few weeks before we shoot the next Guild episode, we have availability issues with crew and cast, so I’ll have the time to maybe add cooler stuff to my acting site, after all, that’s the whole point of all of this!  Am I the only one who, when tweaking web stuff,  gets caught in a spiral of wanting to change stuff just to look new, of wanting to throw everything out and start new?  Tell me to stop it!  I need to remind myself, it’s not like putting on a new outfit, it’s like painting a house.  :)
